The Second Void

When the balloon pops, what’s revealed is that you’ve never truly existed. You’re nothing but space/air/awareness. Space/air is nothing, nothing exists and neither do you. The cushy ego/balloon was a false sense you were something other than air/space/awareness. What was inside of the balloon has now been absorbed into all that is.

Imagine we are all balloons. The thick rubber layer is our self (the witness) and our identity (the character). As we go through life, this rubber forms from everything we’ve been told, everything we’ve felt, and all the stories we’ve carried about who we are.

The more we face and soften these layers, the more air fills the balloon. As it expands, the rubber grows thinner, allowing more light to shine through. That light reveals the deeper truths that lie beyond the rubber. Glimpses of non-duality and a felt connectedness with what’s beyond the balloon.

At some point, the identity no longer holds. Enough light shines through that the character dissolves. The unconscious lifelong work of maintaining a persona quietly falls away. A new freedom opens. The light pouring through the balloon walls causes everything to look more beautiful and vibrant. The expansive space makes you feel weightless.

Then something shifts again. You see you are not the balloon at all, but the air awareness itself. Boundless, invisible, alive. Yet you are still the balloon witnessing.

As more air flows in, the balloon can no longer contain it. It bursts. Suddenly there is no inside and no outside. The air that seemed separate is revealed as the same as all space. What remains is vastness. You were never the balloon, never only the air within it. You are the boundless expanse in which balloon, air, and even space itself arise and dissolve.
